Newly appointed Russian deputy governor arrested amid corruption crackdown
Sergei Yegorov, the deputy, the deputy governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, has been arrested just months after taking office. His appointment in late summer 2023 followed the resignation of his predecessor, who faced corruption allegations.
Yegorov was officially named deputy, deputy governor in September 2023. He replaced Ilya Shtokman, who is currently under investigation for allegedly accepting a large bribe.
The arrest comes shortly after Yegorov assumed his role as deputy in regional government. With his predecessor already facing legal scrutiny, the case adds to ongoing concerns about corruption in the oblast. Investigations into both officials remain active.
