Nextcloud and IONOS launch Euro-Office as a secure Microsoft alternative

A new open-source office suite called Euro-Office is in development, led by Nextcloud and IONOS. The software aims to provide a secure alternative to Microsoft Office for small businesses and public sector organisations. Its first stable release is planned for this summer. The project builds on a fork of OnlyOffice's open-source components. Developers chose this codebase for its modern architecture, which they consider more advanced than LibreOffice or Collabora. Nextcloud and IONOS have also reviewed and rebuilt non-open parts of OnlyOffice to improve security.

Euro-Office is designed to replace Collabora, currently used in Nextcloud and IONOS Nextcloud Workspace. The team plans to hire more developers to speed up progress. Unlike openDesk, Euro-Office will focus on tighter app integration and expanded AI features. Nextcloud is taking the lead to ensure smooth compatibility with its own platform. The goal is a seamless experience for users who rely on cloud-based productivity tools.

The suite will launch in a stable version within months. Once released, it could become the default office solution for Nextcloud and IONOS customers. Both companies see it as a long-term alternative to proprietary software in professional and government settings.
