Nidwalden scraps expansion for a brand-new hospital under Luks network
Plans for a new hospital in Nidwalden have taken a fresh direction after the cancellation of the 'Sommervogel' extension project. Officials abandoned the earlier scheme due to rising costs and are now pursuing a full rebuild. The new facility will join the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital (Luks) group, which will oversee five hospitals across three cantons by 2026.
The original proposal to expand Nidwalden Hospital was scrapped after financial concerns arose. Instead, authorities have decided to construct an entirely new building. During the transition, the existing hospital will remain operational and receive upgrades to keep medical services up to date.
The project marks a major shift in Nidwalden’s healthcare infrastructure, with a focus on modern outpatient news. Construction timelines and final site approvals will shape the next steps, while the current hospital continues to serve patients during the build. The new facility will eventually become part of a larger regional network managed by Luks.
