Nigeria, Germany Strengthen Counterterrorism Cooperation, Rebuffing U.S. Threats
Nigeria has made it clear that it will not solely depend on international intervention to combat terrorism within its borders. Instead, it favours multinational support for its existing measures. Germany, in response, has pledged to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in peace, international security, and counterterrorism efforts.
Terrorist violence continues to persist in Nigeria, particularly in the northeastern regions. Nigeria's current strategies include a multinational task force tackling the Boko Haram conflict. This task force, supported by both Nigeria and Germany, comprises African nations and promotes regional solutions. Germany contributes through advisory and training support for local security forces, as well as collaboration with regional initiatives led by Nigeria and other West African states.
Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has commended Nigeria's approach to countering terrorism. Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, on the other hand, advocates for partners to align with regionally developed frameworks to address security challenges, believing that engaging with such initiatives works better than imposing solutions. This approach has been echoed by Nigeria's stance on international intervention.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's recent threat of military action against 'Islamist terrorists' in Nigeria, Nigeria and Germany continue to support the multinational task force in its fight against terrorism. This collaboration reflects their commitment to regional solutions and mutual cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.
