Nigeria Launches National Job Centre Project to Boost Employment
The Federal Government has launched the National Job Centre Project, a nationwide network of employability hubs. The project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to promote dignified, inclusive, and transformative work for Nigerians. Rt. Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, announced the project at the Mastercard Foundation Annual Nigeria Partner Convening in Lagos.
The National Job Centres will integrate digital job matching, data tracking, and career advisory services to improve job placement systems across Nigeria. The project aims to connect trained Nigerians to real job opportunities and strengthen Nigeria's labour market infrastructure. Last year, the state disbursed N849,555,000 in scholarships and bursaries to 10,066 students in its tertiary institutions, preparing them for the job market.
The state government has rolled out multiple employment and skill-building programmes, including the Lagos State Graduate Internship Placement Programme. The Minister also unveiled the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), a flagship scheme to improve the employability of young Nigerians and ensure smoother transitions from training to jobs. A recent survey by the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund revealed over 46,000 jobseekers competed for job openings in 2024, with an average of 2,837 vacancies per month.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment invites partners to collaborate in driving job access and accelerating economic outcomes across Nigeria's labour ecosystem. The National Job Centre Project is expected to significantly improve job placement systems and connect trained Nigerians to real job opportunities, contributing to the nation's economic growth.
