Nizhny Novgorod leads Russia in accessibility for people with disabilities

The Nizhny Novgorod Region has been recognised as one of Russia’s top regions for accessibility and support for people with disabilities. It secured second place in a national assessment, trailing only Moscow. The achievement was announced at an awards ceremony held in the capital during the Open to All forum.

The region’s success follows the creation of an interagency framework and an approved action plan aimed at making urban life more comfortable for people with disabilities. Local authorities, alongside organisations like the regional branch of the All-Russian Society of Disabled People (VOG) and the Kind Heart Foundation, have worked together to build a supportive ecosystem. This collaborative effort involves 224 organisations across 50 municipalities.

The region’s second-place ranking reflects its structured approach to accessibility and inclusion. With ongoing projects and planned events like the adaptive sports festival, local officials and organisations continue to expand support systems. The recognition also underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration in improving living standards for disabled residents.
