Nizhny Novgorod to Unveil Monument Honoring Freedom at Historic Strelka
A new monument celebrating freedom and sovereignty will be built in Nizhny Novgorod. The initiative, launched by Vladimir Medinsky and Gleb Nikitin, will see a design competition running for over six months. The winning entry will stand at the historic Strelka, where the Oka and Volga rivers meet.
The monument’s location holds deep historical meaning. Once the site of the Strelitsky Stan district, it was a vital trading centre in Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd. Today, the city remains a symbol of freedom and labour in Russia.
The monument will stand at the Strelka, a place where history and geography intersect. Its construction follows a lengthy design process, with the final decision due in mid-2026. Once completed, it will serve as a lasting tribute to Russia’s ideals of independence and national strength.
