Nizhny Novgorod unites in faith and history on Unity Day celebrations
Today, Nizhny Novgorod celebrates two significant holidays: Unity Day and the Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Metropolitan Georgiy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas led the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, honouring these intertwined historical events.
Governor Gleb Nikitin met with religious leaders to express gratitude for their role in preserving interethnic peace and harmony. Despite heavy rain, believers organised a people's cross procession from the Kremlin to Unity Square, where a monument to Patriarch Hermogenes was unveiled beside the statue of Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky.
The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, discovered in 1579, became a symbol of national salvation after Patriarch Hermogenes' death. His calls to defend the land and faith inspired Minin and Pozharsky's heroic deeds. Representatives of religious confessions and regional authorities laid flowers at Kuzma Minin’s tomb in the Michael the Archangel Cathedral within the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
The celebrations honoured the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a symbol of unity and faith, and paid tribute to those who have defended Russia's heritage and values.
