Nizhny Novgorod’s 2009 unemployment crisis saw 60,000 jobless amid economic strain

Unemployment figures in Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia, have been revealed for the period from January to August 2009. A total of 60,841 individuals were recognised as jobless under Russia’s Employment Law. The highest rates were recorded in several districts, with Sosnovsky leading at 4.54%. As of September 1, 2009, the official joblessness count stood at 34,714, under the governorship of Valery Pavlinovich Shantsev.

During this period, employment agencies arranged vocational training for 4,162 jobless individuals. The registered joblessness rate in the region was 1.92% as of September 1, 2009. Job seekers turned to employment centers in large numbers, with 161,435 residents seeking assistance from January to August. The labor market tension coefficient stood at 1.59, indicating a moderate level of tension. Employers reported 24,718 job openings, with 16,831 for skilled labor positions and 14,733 offering wages above the regional subsistence minimum. Despite the challenges, job placement services helped 111,481 people find employment.

The Nizhny Novgorod Region faced joblessness challenges in 2009, with varying rates across districts. However, efforts by employment agencies and job centers resulted in thousands of individuals finding work, demonstrating a commitment to addressing joblessness and supporting the region's labor market.
