Nizhny Novgorod’s wastewater plant overhauls leadership after years of foul odors
A foul stench from Nizhny Novgorod’s wastewater treatment plant has led to major changes at the facility. The director was removed, and the entire management team was replaced after violations in treatment processes caused persistent bad smells. A large-scale reconstruction is now underway to fix the issue. The unpleasant odours came from residual bioorganic waste and sludge left on the aeration fields. Officials confirmed that failures in wastewater treatment had worsened the issue. In response, the city dismissed the plant’s director and appointed a deputy head of administration to oversee the project in September 2024. The reconstruction aims to resolve the long-standing issue of foul smells from the plant. With new equipment in place and stricter oversight, the facility should meet treatment standards again. Residents can expect improvements in air quality as the work progresses.
