In China, they eat dogs - or do they?! - ‘Nord bei Nordwest’ Tackles Espionage and Uyghur Crisis in Bold 25th Film
The popular German crime series Nord bei Nordwest is expanding its schedule. From 2026, four new films will air each year, up from the previous three. The first broadcast will be a rerun of Duck with Mushrooms on January 22, 2026, but the 25th instalment—an espionage thriller—has already drawn attention for its bold themes and suspenseful plot.
The 2025 episode, titled Fette Ente mit Pilzen, centres on the accidental death of a woman at Mandarin, a Chinese restaurant in Schwanitz. Written by Holger Karsten Schmidt and directed by Stephanie Doehlemann, the story takes a sharp turn when the victim is revealed to be a diplomat. A Chinese special police officer soon arrives to investigate, unravelling a case tied to the Uyghur minority’s treatment in China.
The restaurant itself plays a key role. Bathed in eerie red light, Mandarin feels unsettling from the start. Staff act with open suspicion, and the business is quickly flagged as a potential front for money laundering. Meanwhile, the film leans into China-related clichés—but uses them for biting satire rather than stereotype. On a personal level, Hauke’s unspoken feelings for Hannah surface when she announces her engagement to Kevin. The trio—Hauke, Jule, and Hannah—are set to meet Kevin at Mandarin, adding tension to an already charged setting. The episode blends political intrigue with emotional stakes, keeping viewers guessing until the end.
The 25th Nord bei Nordwest film marks a shift for the series, tackling international espionage and human rights issues. With its mix of suspense, satire, and personal drama, the episode sets a new tone for future instalments. The expanded schedule means fans can expect more cases—and more twists—in the year ahead.
