Nordhorn’s Orange Benches Spark a Movement Against Gender-Based Violence
Nordhorn is taking a stand against violence towards women with a new public campaign. Three bright orange benches will appear across the town as part of the global Orange the World initiative. The move coincides with Orange Day on November 25, a UN-backed event to raise awareness and support survivors.
The benches carry a powerful message: breaking the silence and promoting solidarity, respect, and equality. Each one is painted in a striking shade of orange, a colour chosen by the United Nations to represent hope, visibility, and a future without violence. The campaign also honours the Mirabal sisters, three activists murdered in 1960 for opposing a dictatorship.
The orange benches will serve as lasting reminders of the town’s commitment to combating violence. Residents and visitors can use the QR codes to find help or learn more about support networks. The initiative aims to keep the conversation alive long after November 25 has passed.
