Scharrenbach rejects municipalities' demand for more money - North Rhine-Westphalia denies more funding as mayors push back on budget cuts

North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister for Local Government, Ina Scharrenbach, has dismissed calls for increased funding for municipalities. She cited budget constraints and urged local authorities to review their spending. Many mayors are seeking higher baseline funding from the state government due to expenditures outstripping revenues. Scharrenbach, however, has argued that those demanding more money should specify which areas should face cuts. Traditionally considered areas for savings include personnel costs, administrative expenses, public services like culture and sports, infrastructure investments, and social services. Scharrenbach emphasized that spending is the core issue and urged local authorities to scrutinize their budgets. She has advised local authorities to review their spending, with no mention of raising the share of tax revenue allocated to them.
