North Syracuse mayor resigns after 24 years in local government
Gary Butterfield has resigned as mayor of the Village of North Syracuse. His departure comes after nearly nine years in the role and a total of 24 years in local government. He cited his age and minor health concerns as the reasons for stepping down.
Butterfield first became mayor in June 2015, having already served as a village trustee since July 2005. His latest term was due to run until June 2027, but he officially left office on March 13, 2023. Before taking on the mayoral position, he had spent 24 years working in various public roles within the village.
His resignation leaves a vacancy that will now be filled by the village trustees. They are expected to meet soon to elect a new mayor to complete the remaining term.
The village will now move forward under new leadership, chosen by the trustees. Butterfield's departure marks the end of a long career in local government, spanning both trustee and mayoral roles. The next mayor will serve until the scheduled end of the term in 2027.
