Northern Civic Amenity Site to Close Briefly for Operator Transition

The Northern Civic Amenity Site will shut its doors for just over a week from March 23 to April 1. This temporary closure follows months of uncertainty after Bride Commissioners pulled out of the joint project last year. A new operator is now set to take over the facility on April 1.

The site's future has been in doubt since April 2024, when Bride Commissioners withdrew from the joint committee. They cited high operational costs as the reason for their departure. Their exit left a £67,000 funding shortfall, which the Department of Infrastructure stepped in to cover temporarily.

A tender process was later launched to find a replacement operator. With the new contractor now selected, the outgoing committee will use the closure period to finalise preparations. Essential work must be completed before the handover on April 1. The pause in service will allow the transition to proceed smoothly. Once reopened, the site will continue under new management.

The temporary shutdown marks the end of a period of instability for the facility. From April 1, the new contractor will take full control of operations. The Department of Infrastructure's funding support will no longer be required once the handover is complete.
