Norway upgrades Arctic border defenses amid rising tensions with Russia

Norway has initiated a substantial modernization of its border surveillance system along its border with Russia. The project, a collaborative effort of several key agencies, aims to fortify security in response to the current European situation.

The Police Directorate heads an interagency steering group overseeing the implementation. The first phase will commence at Skafferhullet, a former border crossing in Sør-Varanger municipality. The police and armed forces will collaborate to further develop the border mission.

The modernization involves testing new masts and alternative sensors, and utilizing drones for detection and observation along the border. This follows a takeover of leadership by the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) in November 2021, which united police, defense staff, and local forces to implement the plan.

Funded by approximately $17 million from the EU's Border Management and Visa Instrument, this modernization seeks to upgrade surveillance systems, enhancing national and regional security. The project underscores Norway's commitment to bolstering its borders in light of recent incidents, such as the interception of a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane over the Barents Sea.
