NRW Black-Green Coalition Reaffirms 2045 Climate Neutrality Pledge
The black-green coalition in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2045, with the Greens backing the current strategy. The coalition aims to expand renewable energies, promote green hydrogen, and improve energy efficiency in buildings and transport.
NRW has already surpassed its initial climate target, reducing greenhouse gases by 39% by 2020, exceeding the 25% reduction goal. The state plans to further reduce emissions by 65% by 2030 and 88% by 2040, aiming to become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe by 2045.
The state government is taking steps to make its public administration climate-neutral by 2030, focusing on sensitizing and motivating employees, as well as converting vehicle fleets and buildings.
NRW, being the most energy-hungry state due to its metal and chemical industries, estimates the need for gas-fired power plants at around five gigawatts, while the federal government plans for up to 20 gigawatts.
The FDP has criticized Hamburg's decision to aim for climate neutrality by 2040, warning that it could lead to 'self-destruction' for NRW. Meanwhile, the AfD rejects the Greens' agenda, advocating for nuclear power plants instead. Despite these differing views, the black-green coalition in NRW remains committed to its 2045 climate neutrality target.
