NRW Deploys AI to Speed Up Income Tax Processing Statewide
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has become the first German state to roll out AI across all its tax offices. The system will now handle routine income tax returns, speeding up assessments for thousands of taxpayers. Officials describe the move as a major step forward in digital tax administration. The AI pilot began in four locations: Brühl, Bielefeld-Außenstadt, Hamm, and Lübbecke. After testing, the technology is now being introduced in all 104 tax offices across NRW. Its main task is to filter and process straightforward cases, such as employees with fixed incomes, pensions, or investment interest.
The system is designed to cut manual reviews by around 800,000 each year. This shift allows tax officials to focus on more complex cases. NRW Finance Minister Marcus Optendrenk highlighted that AI makes tax administration faster and more citizen-friendly. The Taxpayers' Association of NRW supports the change, seeing it as an improvement on existing pre-screening methods. However, they advise taxpayers to check their assessments carefully, even with automated processing.
The AI rollout aims to deliver quicker assessments while freeing up staff for complicated tax matters. NRW officials call it a win-win for both taxpayers and administrators. The system marks the state's first systematic use of AI in income tax risk management.
