NYC Mayoral Race Rocked by False Times of London Report

A recent New York City mayoral election has been marred by controversy following a false report in The Times Of London. The article, which quoted Bill de Blasio criticising candidate Zohran Mamdani, was entirely fabricated, leading to an apology and retraction from the publication.

The misquoted comment was initially attributed to Bill de Blasio, the former mayor of New York City. However, the actual source of the quote was a Long Island wine importer who shares the same name. The journalist, Margi Conklin, contacted this individual, mistaking him for the former mayor. The wine importer, surprised that his personal opinions were published, assumed the reporter would have verified his credentials.

The false report gained traction when political rival Andrew Cuomo shared it on social media. This further fuelled the controversy, with Mamdani's campaign team expressing concern over the accuracy of the reporting. Former mayor Bill de Blasio swiftly disavowed the report, stating that the quoted comments did not reflect his views. The Times Of London later issued an apology and retraction, acknowledging the mistake.

The false report has raised questions about the journalistic standards and fact-checking processes at The Times Of London. Margi Conklin, the U.S. Director of Content, has been accused of pressuring for more critical pieces on Zohran Mamdani. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough fact-checking and verification in journalism, especially during political campaigns.
