What happened on October 2? - October 2: A Day of Notable Births, Mergers, and Milestones

Today marks the birthday of several notable figures and significant events. Eberhard von Kuenheim, the former CEO of BMW, and Antonio Di Pietro, the Italian anti-corruption crusader, were both born on this day. Additionally, it was on October 2 that ProSieben Media AG and Sat.1 Satellite TV merged in 2000, creating the largest TV company in Germany. This day also saw the premiere of 'Kulturzeit' in 1995, a daily culture magazine still produced today.

Eberhard von Kuenheim, born in 1928, led BMW AG from 1970 to 1999, first as CEO and then as Chairman of the Supervisory Board. Meanwhile, Antonio Di Pietro, born in 1950, founded the 'Mani Pulite' team in Italy to combat political corruption. Turning to broadcasting, ProSieben Media AG and Sat.1 Satellite TV merged on October 2, 2000, forming ProSiebenSAT.1 Media AG and becoming the largest TV company in Germany with four channels. The same day in 1995 saw the debut of 'Kulturzeit' on 3sat, a daily culture magazine produced by ARD, ZDF, ORF, and SRF.

In 2025, Germany celebrated 35 years of unity with festive events in Saarbrücken on October 2, leading up to the official Unity Day celebrations on October 3. Ralf Stegner, born in 1959, served as Minister of the Interior and Finance in Schleswig-Holstein during this period. Looking back, the Volkskammer of the GDR dissolved in a festive session in East Berlin on October 2, 1990, the day before German reunification. Tragically, on the same day in 1940, the German occupiers established a ghetto in Warsaw for the Jewish population, forcing up to 460,000 people to live under unbearable conditions. On a lighter note, the beloved comic strip 'Peanuts' by Charles M. Schulz first appeared in U.S. newspapers on October 2, 1950.

October 2 has been a significant day throughout history, marked by the births of influential figures, major mergers, and cultural milestones. It has also witnessed pivotal moments in German history, including the dissolution of the Volkskammer and the establishment of the Warsaw ghetto. Today, we remember and honor these events and the individuals who have shaped our world.
