Offenbach faces financial crisis as costs surge and revenues shrink in 2024
Offenbach is grappling with escalating financial strain in 2024, with rising costs and dwindling revenues necessitating a supplementary budget for approval this autumn. Officials caution that without additional savings, planning for 2025 will become significantly more challenging.
A faltering economy and soaring inflation have taken a toll on Offenbach's finances. Trade tax revenues, initially projected to reach €90 million, are now anticipated to dip to €85 million. This shortfall exacerbates the strain caused by wage increases of nearly 11 percent, which took effect at the end of 2023.
The supplementary budget seeks to offset rising costs and lower revenues. If no further savings are identified, balancing the 2025 budget will grow increasingly onerous. The city council's decision in October will chart Offenbach's financial course for the coming year.
