Offenbach’s flood defences get urgent upgrade as power line relocation begins
Major work is set to begin along the Main River dike in Offenbach to strengthen flood defences. The project comes as rising flood risks demand urgent reinforcement of the ageing structure. Before the dike itself can be upgraded, a key power line must be moved, requiring road closures and traffic changes.
The first step involves relocating a high-voltage cable buried beneath Mainstraße. Energienetze Offenbach GmbH (ENO) will handle the job, installing a new 20-kilovolt medium-voltage line by March 2025. Work starts this week on a 170-metre section and will continue until August 20, 2024.
The dike’s reinforcement will improve flood resilience for Offenbach. Traffic disruptions along Mainstraße will remain in place until March 2025, with further changes expected once dike construction begins. The city has not yet detailed the full timeline for completing the flood defence upgrades.
