Ohio State Trooper Killed in Highway Crash on Route 11
A tragic incident occurred on State Route 11 in Mahoning County on Thursday around 11:52 a.m. An Ohio State Trooper, 40-year-old Nicholas P. Cayton, was killed when a truck rear-ended his cruiser while he was assisting a disabled semitruck. The trooper was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the truck, Ryan Rach, was uninjured. The other driver involved, Jesus Herrera Vasquez, was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Trooper Cayton was sitting in his cruiser with emergency lights on when the truck crashed into the back of his vehicle. The impact caused the cruiser to hit the back of the semitruck and also struck Vasquez, who was standing outside his vehicle. The crash remains under investigation. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered U.S. and Ohio flags to be flown at half-staff in Mahoning County and at the Ohio Statehouse in honor of Trooper Cayton. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Trooper Cayton's funeral.
Trooper Cayton's death is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily while serving and protecting their communities. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
