Ohio's Legendary Strickland's Ice Cream Opens First West Coast Shop in California
A beloved Ohio ice cream shop has expanded to the West Coast for the first time. Strickland's, a family-run business since 1936, recently opened a franchised location in Costa Mesa, California. The brand is known for its rich, creamy ice cream and classic flavours.
Strickland's began in Akron, Ohio, where the original shop still operates with its vintage equipment. Over the years, the business has grown to five locations across Ohio—all franchised except the first. Each branch features four ice cream machines: one for chocolate, one for vanilla, and two for rotating flavours.
The secret behind the smooth texture lies in the machinery. The equipment freezes the mix rapidly while churning it slowly, creating a distinct creaminess. Franchisees choose the rotating flavours, but they must gain approval from Scott and Jacob Margroff, the current owners. Banana has remained a top pick among customers for decades. The Margroffs recently discussed their approach to running the business, including flavour development and future growth. While no further expansions are planned beyond the new California shop and the five Ohio locations, the family continues to focus on quality and tradition.
The Costa Mesa opening marks Strickland's first step outside Ohio. The brand's signature process and family oversight ensure consistency across all locations. For now, fans can enjoy the same classic flavours and creamy texture, whether in Akron or California.
