Ohligs' Cityring redesign sparks backlash over parking cuts and retail risks

Plans to redesign access routes in Ohligs city centre have faced sharp criticism from local leaders. District mayor Westkämper called the proposals a 'relic of the red-green era' and warned against pushing them through without changes. The CDU faction also rejected the current plans, labelling them 'unacceptable' and demanding major revisions.

The controversy centres on the Cityring redesign, which could remove around 70 parking spaces. An additional 100 spots might disappear if a new bike route goes ahead. Westkämper argued that simply cutting parking would hurt Ohligs' struggling retail sector, especially in tough economic times.

He also accused the city administration of ignoring concerns over parking losses and failing to engage properly with affected businesses. Instead of rushing decisions, he stressed the need for consensus-based solutions, even if they take longer.

At the OAM district council meeting, the agenda item on restructuring access routes was postponed. While Westkämper signalled willingness to discuss the plans further, he insisted on a 'reasonable compromise' that balances the needs of all road users. The CDU faction echoed this stance, refusing to support the proposals in their current form.

No official data exists on current parking availability in Ohligs or how it has changed in recent years.

The redesign plans now face delays as leaders push for a rethink. Westkämper's call for broader dialogue suggests negotiations will continue before any final decisions. The outcome will determine how parking, cycling, and retail interests are balanced in Ohligs' future.
