Okean Elzy's Vienna Show Raises Funds and Awareness for Ukraine
Ukraine's leading rock band, Okean Elzy, led by Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, recently captivated fans in Vienna. The band's performance was part of the #HelpForUkraineTour, aiming to raise funds for protecting ambulances from drone strikes and sustaining global interest in Ukraine.
Okean Elzy, formed in 1994 by Vakarchuk, a physicist by training, has evolved into 'the most important group of independent Ukraine'. Their music, including recent songs like 'Answer' and 'February Never Ends', directly addresses the war in Ukraine. The band's success has led Vakarchuk to become involved in Ukrainian politics, serving briefly in parliament.
Vakarchuk opposes the proposed nomination of Teodor Currentzis, a Russia-based conductor, to Austria’s arts council. He believes that Ukrainians have the right to reject figures associated with the enemy state. Vakarchuk's predecessor in the Ukrainian parliament was Andriy Sadovyi, before he founded the new right-liberal faction for his party Holos in 2019–20.
Okean Elzy's recent Vienna performance, part of their belated 30th-anniversary European tour, raised funds and awareness for Ukraine. Vakarchuk's stance on the proposed nomination of Teodor Currentzis reflects the band's commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing war.
