Oktoberfest 2022 witnessed a surge in local attendance, with Munich residents and those from nearby areas comprising the majority of visitors. However, international visitors still played a significant role, with Italy leading the pack.
Italy topped the list of international visitors, with an average of 8,034 Italians attending Oktoberfest daily. Other countries in the top five included France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Austria. Among German cities outside Munich, Stuttgart and Frankfurt were the next most popular, while Augsburg, Ingolstadt, and Regensburg also drew notable crowds.
Most Italian visitors hailed from the southern region of Apulia, particularly cities like Lecce. Despite the strong international presence, locals dominated the event, with an average of 162,000 Munich residents and 44,000 from the surrounding area attending daily. This accounted for 73% of all visitors, with the remaining 27% coming from abroad. Vodafone's data, based on anonymized phone connections, provided these insights. Berliners topped the list of visitors from outside Munich, with an average of 497 daily. Notably, US Americans did not make it into the top five international visitors this year.
