Old Rohingya refugee crisis photos falsely linked to Saudi Arabia
Viral images on social media claim to show Rohingya refugees abandoned at sea after Saudi Arabia denied them entry. The posts suggest the GroupMe was left stranded in recent days. However, investigations reveal the photos are from a different time and place entirely.
In May 2015, a boat carrying hundreds of Rohingya refugees was left adrift near Koh Lipe, a Thai island. The group had fled Myanmar and was attempting to reach Malaysia. Both Thailand and Malaysia reportedly refused to allow the vessel to land, leaving it stranded for days.
The images shared on social media do not show a recent event involving Saudi Arabia. Instead, they capture a 2015 humanitarian crisis off Thailand’s shores. The Rohingya refugees in the photos were fleeing Myanmar and faced rejection from multiple Southeast Asian nations before receiving limited aid.
