Olsberg Fire Department honors decades of bravery and community service
The Olsberg Fire Department recently held its annual City Fire Brigade Day in Bigge, celebrating its volunteers and achievements. Former mayor Wolfgang Fischer received the German Fire Brigade Association’s Medal of Honor for his dedication to the Olsberg Fire Brigade.
The event, held on May 10, 2025, saw Mayor Fischer and Fire Chief Marc Stappert welcoming numerous guests and dignitaries at the Bigge Shooting Hall. Several volunteers were honoured for their years of service, with 12 recognised for 25 years and 10 for 35 years.
The Olsberg Fire Department responded to 401 callouts in 2023/24, including 171 for fires and 230 for technical assistance. The department has 578 active volunteers across various divisions, with 297 operational responders.
The Bigge-Olsberg Volunteer Fire Brigade Marching Band, established in 1927, is now led by Drum Major Stefan Menke. An open rehearsal for the band will be held on May 17 at 2 p.m. at the Bigge fire station on Ramecke Street. Meanwhile, construction of a new fire station for the Bigge-Olsberg unit in Ramecke is set to begin soon, with a budget of €10.59 million. The new station will replace the existing one and better serve the community's needs.
The Olsberg Fire Department has also seen an increase in youth involvement, with 44 children joining through junior fire brigades established in Bruchhausen, Wulmeringhausen, and Bigge-Olsberg.
The Olsberg Fire Department continues to grow and adapt, with new facilities, increased youth engagement, and dedicated volunteers. The recent awards and honours reflect the department's commitment to serving the community and its firefighters' dedication to their roles.
