The image shows a black and white drawing of a city with a river running through it, featuring buildings, trees, and text. The city appears to be a fortress, with a large tower in the center and several smaller towers surrounding it. The river is winding its way through the city, and the trees are lush and green. The text on the image is likely a description of the fortress, providing further details about its structure.

Omsk Fortress redevelopment sparks outrage as construction begins without public input

A controversial redevelopment plan for Tukhachevsky Embankment near the Omsk Fortress is moving ahead despite opposition. Local historians and activists have raised concerns over changes that include a dry fountain and viewing platform on the proposed platform. Construction work has already begun, with earthworks underway along the Irtysh River banks.

The project centres on a dry fountain and a raised viewing platform on the platform, both of which would block views of the Tobolsk Gates. Sketches also show the removal of the existing emergency descent to the river. Critics argue the plans lack proper expert review and public consultation, even though they were presented to the regional governor.

An alternative proposal by activists suggests restoring the fifth demi-bastion, curtain wall, moat, and glacis of the fortress. Their vision includes an amphitheatre and a space for historical reenactments. However, no official records exist of this counter-proposal being formally reviewed or debated.

Sberbank is reportedly financing the embankment reconstruction. Despite objections, construction teams have started reshaping the area near the fortress. No public discussions or revisions to the design have taken place.

The embankment project continues without open dialogue or adjustments to address concerns. The dry fountain and viewing platform on the platform remain part of the plan, altering the riverside landscape. Meanwhile, the alternative restoration proposal for the fortress has yet to gain official consideration.
