A new survey reveals that most online shoppers in Germany carefully check terms before buying discounted products. Eight out of ten (82%) review conditions when an item is on sale, while nearly as many (79%) do the same for heavily advertised goods. These findings come ahead of the Bitkom Conference for Safer Internet Day, set for February 11, 2025.

The YouGov survey, which polled 1,006 German internet users, highlights how discounts influence buying habits. Two-thirds (66%) of shoppers admit to purchasing more than planned when lured by promotions. Yet, 78% claim they can recognise misleading discount tactics.

Online shopping remains a daily activity for many. Four per cent of users shop every day, while 28% do so at least once a week. Another 36% make purchases several times a month. Only a small fraction (3%) never shop online. The upcoming Bitkom Conference will tackle key issues around online marketplaces. Topics include consumer protection rules, education for shoppers, and the competitiveness of European providers. Experts will also weigh the risks and opportunities tied to digital shopping platforms.

The survey underscores how discounts shape consumer behaviour, with many buying extra items due to promotions. The conference aims to address these trends while exploring ways to protect shoppers in a growing digital market. Discussions will focus on regulations, awareness, and the role of European businesses.
