Online payment disputes leave shoppers stranded with rising complaints
Online payment services like PayPal and Klarna promise quick and easy checkouts for shoppers. Yet customers increasingly face problems when orders go wrong or deliveries fail to arrive. Complaints have surged in recent years, with around 1,200 cases reported in Lower Saxony alone during 2023—and numbers continuing to climb.
Many shoppers assume a retailer's partnership with a payment provider ensures a smooth purchase. In reality, disputes often arise when orders are cancelled or items never arrive. Some providers fail to respond properly, leaving customers struggling for support.
When issues escalate, payment firms may side with retailers and involve debt collectors prematurely. Customers report receiving late fees or payment reminders from Klarna even after settling bills on time. If faced with an unjust invoice, experts advise disputing the claim in writing and withholding payment until the matter is resolved. For those dealing with debt collection agencies, objections must be submitted formally—either by post or email. If a provider refuses to cooperate, complaints can be filed with Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). The watchdog has the power to investigate and take regulatory action where necessary. The Consumer Advice Center of Lower Saxony now offers free guidance for affected shoppers. Help is available in person, over the phone, or via video call, reflecting the growing demand for support.
Payment services remain popular for their convenience, but disputes can quickly turn costly. Customers now have clearer steps to challenge unfair fees or debt collection threats. With complaints rising, authorities and advice centres are expanding support to address the issue.
