Opposition MPs demand impeachment of High Court judge over undisclosed cash

A group of MPs has called for the impeachment of Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma. The demand follows claims of undisclosed cash found in his storeroom. Several opposition parties have backed the move, adding pressure on the government to act.

The push to remove Justice Varma began after reports emerged about large sums of money in his possession. MPs formally submitted a memorandum to the Lok Sabha speaker, requesting his removal from office.

The opposition’s support has grown, with parties like TDP, JD(U), JD(S), LJP, SKP, and CPI(M) joining the call. The Congress, however, has not taken a formal stance against the judge. This is because no official impeachment process has started yet.

On 21 May, the Supreme Court rejected a plea to file an FIR against Justice Varma over the cash discovery. Since then, no further legal steps have been taken against him.

The demand for impeachment now rests with the Lok Sabha speaker. If accepted, it could lead to formal proceedings. For now, the case remains stalled, with no new legal action reported.
