Orange Bench in Göppingen Stands as a Bold Statement Against Gender Violence
A bright orange bench now stands in Göppingen’s market square as a powerful symbol against violence towards women and girls. The Inner Wheel Club Göppingen unveiled it to mark the end of the UN’s Orange the World campaign. Local officials and activists gathered for the handover, which also included a donation to a women’s shelter.
The bench carries the message No Place for Violence Against Women and Girls in bold letters. It was built by students at the Bodelschwingh School through their Göppinger Wunderhölzle project. A QR code on the bench links to the Inner Wheel Club’s website, offering resources and support for those affected.
Mayor Alex Maier accepted the bench on behalf of the city, thanking the club for their commitment. The event also raised funds for Frauen- und Kinderhilfe Göppingen, the local women’s shelter, through the club’s charity work. The need for such initiatives remains urgent. Federal crime data shows domestic violence cases increasing each year, with women making up four out of five victims. The Inner Wheel Club, the world’s largest volunteer women’s service organisation, focuses on projects that protect and empower women and children.
The bench will serve as both a memorial and a conversation starter in the heart of Göppingen. It provides visible support for survivors while directing people to help. The club’s donation will further assist local women and children at risk.
