Osnabrück nears universal gigabit internet after massive fiber-optic rollout
A major fiber-optic expansion in Osnabrück is almost finished after two years of work. The government-backed project has already connected 85% of eligible houses to high-speed internet. Officials say the strong uptake shows how much the region needed better digital infrastructure. The scheme, funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport alongside Lower Saxony, targets areas where private companies would not normally invest. Telekom is handling the rollout, laying fiber to houses that would otherwise miss out on upgrades. The project moves Osnabrück closer to universal gigabit connectivity. With most houses now connected, the focus shifts to the final addresses before the year-end deadline. Future installations will depend on individual service agreements.
