Overseas Vietnamese deepen ties with homeland through policy and economic engagement
The Vietnamese community abroad continues to strengthen its ties with the homeland, playing an active role in national development. Recent legislative changes and policy adjustments have made it easier for overseas Vietnamese to engage in economic, cultural, and political spheres. Their contributions are now more visible than ever, from property ownership to direct involvement in law-making.
Overseas Vietnamese have long seen themselves as an integral part of the nation. Many now participate in shaping policies, thanks to reforms during the 15th National Assembly (NA) tenure. For the first time, they were invited to share opinions on draft laws and policies, marking a shift in how their voices are heard.
The 16th NA election, held two months earlier than usual, demonstrated Vietnam's proactive approach to leadership transitions. Overseas Vietnamese followed the process closely, exercising their civic rights where possible. The NA has also improved information sharing, ensuring the community stays informed about legislative developments. In Japan, home to around 500,000 Vietnamese nationals, the community acts as a bridge between the two countries. They promote Vietnamese exports at events like Foodex Japan 2026 and organise cultural exchanges, such as the Vietnam-Japan Festival 2026. Their economic contributions extend to labour in factories and trade partnerships. Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, chairman of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Japan, serves on Ibaraki prefecture's policy advisory council. His role involves fostering cooperation in economy, education, and human resources. The community's influence is further strengthened by legal changes, including property ownership rights and amendments to the Law on Nationality. These adjustments have encouraged deeper engagement. Overseas Vietnamese now seek even more mechanisms to contribute to the country's growth, from investment to policy discussions.
The overseas Vietnamese community's role in national development has expanded through legal reforms and greater political inclusion. Their participation in elections, policy discussions, and economic initiatives reflects a stronger connection to Vietnam. As ties deepen, their contributions are likely to grow in both scale and impact.
