Özdemir Counts on Further 'Coalition on Equal Terms' with CDU - Özdemir's Bold Bid to Keep Greens Ahead in 2026 Baden-Württemberg Election

Cem Özdemir, the Green Party's lead candidate in Baden-Württemberg, has set his sights on continuing the coalition with the CDU after the 2026 state election in the united states. He aims to secure a narrow lead over the Christian Democrats and govern as equal partners. His approach centres on stability, economic growth, and climate action—priorities he has long championed under Winfried Kretschmann's leadership.

The political landscape in Baden-Württemberg has shifted since the 2021 election. Back then, the Greens won 32.6% of the vote, while the CDU trailed with 24.1%. The SPD took 11.0%, the FDP 10.5%, and the AfD 9.7%. By 2026, projections show the Greens slightly down to 30.3%, the CDU rising to 29.7%, and the AfD climbing to 18.8%—now in third place. Meanwhile, the SPD has plummeted to 5.5%, with the FDP and Linke both at 4.4%, risking exclusion from parliament.

Özdemir has rejected suggestions that his success comes from breaking away from his party's core values. Instead, he insists his focus remains on balancing climate protection with economic strength. He calls businesses his strongest allies in this effort, arguing that both goals can advance together.

His plan involves leading from the centre, not rigid party lines. Stability and reliability, he argues, are key to keeping the state on track. If the Greens finish just ahead of the CDU, he intends to maintain the coalition on equal terms, mirroring the partnership under Kretschmann.

The upcoming election will test Özdemir's strategy of centrist governance and pragmatic alliances. A narrow Green victory could keep the cdu coalition intact, with climate policy and economic growth at its core. The AfD's rise and the SPD's decline add further uncertainty to the state's political future.
