Pakistan and Bangladesh Negotiate Controversial Defence Pact Ahead of Elections
Pakistan and Bangladesh are in talks over a new defence pact that could reshape regional security ties. The proposed agreement follows a similar deal Pakistan signed with Saudi Arabia last year. Concerns have already been raised about its potential impact on neighbouring India.
A joint working group has been set up to draft the pact, which may include intelligence sharing, military exercises, and arms deals. Pakistan is pushing to finalise the agreement before Bangladesh’s upcoming elections.
Strategic analyst Sushant Sareen warned that the pact could allow Pakistani army involvement in Bangladesh. He suggested the country might even become a base for operations against India. The deal’s exact terms remain unclear, including whether nuclear cooperation will be part of it. The proposed pact mirrors Pakistan’s 2023 defence agreement with Saudi Arabia. That deal includes a clause treating an attack on one country as an attack on both. However, no official timeline or final details have been confirmed yet.
If signed, the pact would mark a significant shift in South Asian defence alliances. It would enable closer military coordination between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The agreement’s potential effects on regional stability are already under scrutiny.
