Pandemic Shifts Spark Unexpected Growth in Home Appliance Sales

The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped consumer spending on home appliances in early 2020. While some markets struggled, others saw unexpected growth as lockdowns shifted priorities from luxury to essential items. Demand for products supporting cooking, cleaning, and grooming at home surged across regions.

In the first half of 2020, the global Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) market, excluding air conditioners, shrank by just -3.7 percent in value. The decline remained modest compared to initial fears, with some areas even showing resilience. Europe, including CIS countries, saw MDA sales dip slightly by -2 percent, while Small Domestic Appliances (SDA) grew by +9 percent.

Developed Asian nations defied the trend, recording a +2.7 percent rise in MDA sales. Consumers prioritised appliances for food storage, preparation, and hygiene, reflecting a shift from discretionary to necessary purchases. Freezers, food processors, and cleaning devices led the growth.

Emerging Asian markets faced sharper challenges. MDA sales in these regions fell by double digits as reduced incomes and cautious spending took hold. Yet the SDA sector, including China, expanded by +10.9 percent, driven by affordable cooking and cleaning tools. Globally, SDAs outperformed expectations with an +8.6 percent increase.

Post-lockdown, a 'revenge shopping' wave accelerated recovery. Consumers rushed to upgrade or replace home appliances, compensating for earlier restraint. The pattern highlighted how quickly demand could rebound once restrictions eased.

The pandemic's impact on appliance markets varied sharply by region and product type. While emerging economies saw steep MDA declines, developed markets and SDAs thrived on essential needs. The rapid recovery after lockdowns also demonstrated the sector's adaptability to sudden shifts in consumer behaviour.
