PEA Strike Enters Eighth Week as Talks Collapse; Unions Escalate Job Action

The Professional Employees Association (PEA) in British Columbia returned to the bargaining table with the provincial government on Wednesday, only for talks to collapse swiftly. This strike, now in its eighth week, is the longest in the union's 51-year history, with no signs of resolution. The PEA, representing every government-licensed professional in B.C., is seeking fair compensation, reimbursement of professional fees, and limits on the use of expensive contractors.

The PEA's strike began on September 2, 2025, demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and job security. This is only the second time the union has gone on strike, highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing dispute. The PEA is now escalating its job action, joining forces with the B.C. General Employees Union, which has been on strike for seven weeks with over 95,000 members in 550 bargaining units.

The PEA's demands include fair compensation for its members, who are skilled professionals such as engineers, geoscientists, foresters, agrologists, veterinarians, psychologists, and pharmacists. They also seek reimbursement of professional fees and limits on the government's reliance on expensive contractors.

With no end in sight, the ongoing strikes by the PEA and the B.C. General Employees Union continue to disrupt public services across British Columbia. The government and the unions must find common ground to resolve these issues and bring an end to the longest strike in the PEA's history.
