Pedestrian critically injured after Berlin collision halts tram traffic
A serious traffic accident took place in Berlin-Hellersdorf on Friday evening. A 61-year-old pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a car at the intersection of Stendaler Straße, Zossener Straße, and Tangermünder Straße. The incident occurred just after 6:25 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response and road closures.
The collision happened when a 60-year-old woman driving along Stendaler Straße turned left onto Zossener Straße on a green light. The pedestrian, a 61-year-old man, was running across Stendaler Straße against a red pedestrian signal at the time. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he underwent urgent surgery and remains in intensive care.
The accident forced authorities to close Stendaler Straße to all traffic, including trams, from 6:40 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. As a result, tram services on lines M6 and M18 faced significant disruptions during the evening. Police from the specialized traffic crimes unit of Police Directorate 3 (East) are now leading the investigation into the incident.
Records show no other severe accidents at this intersection in the past five years.
The pedestrian remains in a critical condition, receiving intensive medical treatment. The road has since reopened, but tram delays persisted for several hours after the collision. Police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
