Pedestrian critically injured after collision shuts down Gelsenkirchen street

A 48-year-old man from Mülheim an der Ruhr was driving his Mercedes box van along Bismarckstraße toward Gelsenkirchen's old town at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, when a 41-year-old Gelsenkirchen resident suddenly ran onto the road near Marschallstraße. Despite the driver's emergency braking, a collision occurred, leaving the pedestrian with severe head injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in inpatient care. The accident investigation required a full closure of Bismarckstraße in both directions.
