Pennsylvania’s £50.9B budget prioritizes education and healthcare amid criticism

Pennsylvania’s 2023 budget has now been finalised at £50.9 billion, marking a 4.7% rise from last year. The plan directs funds toward education, healthcare, and workforce training, but critics argue it falls short in key areas. The budget allocates spending to several priorities. Education funding aims to fix long-standing inequities in public schools and push for structured literacy programmes. Human Services, which manages Medicaid, will continue supporting nearly a quarter of the state’s population, including 39% of children and 13% of seniors. The approved budget increases funding for key sectors but leaves unresolved debates over spending levels and revenue sources. Without new taxes or dedicated transit funding, future financial challenges remain. The plan now moves into implementation, with agencies preparing to distribute the allocated funds.
