Peru declares border emergency as Chile’s election tensions rise over migration
Peru has announced a state of emergency along its border with Chile to control a rising number of migrants. The move follows warnings from far-right Chilean presidential candidate José Antonio Kast about expelling undocumented foreigners if elected. Dozens of people, mainly Venezuelans, are already waiting to cross into Peru as authorities tighten security.
Peruvian President José Jerónimo signed the decree to prevent unauthorised border crossings. Police have stepped up patrols in anticipation of the new measures. The decision comes just weeks before Chile’s runoff election, where Kast faces leftist candidate Jeannette Jara.
The emergency measures aim to maintain order and block irregular migration. With Kast's election looming, both countries are bracing for potential changes in border policies. The situation remains tense as migrants wait for a chance to cross.
