Peru to Become a Key U.S. Non-NATO Ally Under Trump’s New Plan
Peru is set to become a major non-NATO ally of the United States under a plan by President Donald Trump. The announcement follows a formal notification sent to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This move aims to deepen cooperation between the two nations on security and drug enforcement efforts.
The decision comes as Trump pushes to strengthen ties with Latin American partners. His administration is focusing on combating drug trafficking and countering Venezuela’s influence in the region. Peru’s new status would also support President José Jerí, who took office on December 12, 2025, after the removal of Dina Boluarte.
Peru’s new designation as a major non-NATO ally will formalise closer military and security ties with Washington. The partnership is expected to enhance joint efforts against drug trafficking and regional instability. The White House has already begun the official process with Senate notification.
