Pete Buttigieg backs Angie Craig in Minnesota’s heated Senate primary
Former US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has backed Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota’s Democratic Senate primary. His endorsement marks the first time he has supported a candidate in a contested Senate race this election cycle. The move adds to a growing list of high-profile Democrats lining up behind Craig’s campaign.
Craig, a current member of the US House of Representatives, has already secured endorsements from several prominent Democrats. These include Governor Tim Walz, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and Rep. Ilhan Omar. Additional support has come from Sens. Tammy Baldwin, Ruben Gallego, Jacky Rosen, and Andy Kim.
Buttigieg praised Craig as ‘a leader, a fighter, and a skilled legislator’ who delivers results for her constituents. In response, Craig called Buttigieg ‘a leader who knows how to put people first’ and said she was ‘honoured’ by his backing.
Meanwhile, Craig’s main rival in the primary, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, has drawn endorsements from progressive figures. These include Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, Chris Murphy, Jeff Merkley, and Martin Heinrich. The race has exposed divisions among top Democrats in the state.
On the Republican side, former professional basketball player Royce White is running for the seat. He previously lost to Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar by 16 points in the last election. Democrats remain favoured in the open-seat contest, with Republicans not winning a statewide election in Minnesota since 2006.
Buttigieg’s endorsement strengthens Craig’s position in a crowded primary. The race will determine who faces White in November’s general election. Minnesota Democrats have not lost a statewide contest in nearly two decades.
