Pete Hegseth’s Campaign Forces Pentagon to Cut Ties With Scouting America

Scouting America, previously known as the Boy Scouts, will officially adopt its new name in February 2025. The change has sparked controversy, particularly from Pete Hegseth, who claims it undermines traditional values. His opposition has now led to a break between the Pentagon and the long-standing youth organisation.

The Boy Scouts announced in 2024 that it would rebrand as Scouting America, a decision set to take effect on February 8, 2025—the organisation’s 115th anniversary. Critics, including Hegseth, argued the move diluted its focus on boys and 'masculine values'. He also described the shift as an attack on 'boy-friendly spaces'.

The rebranding followed the Scouts’ emergence from bankruptcy in 2023, which allowed them to continue operations while compensating abuse victims. However, the organisation’s growing emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion drew further criticism from Hegseth.

In November 2023, Hegseth presented a proposal to the House Armed Services Committee, urging the Department of Defense to cut ties with the Scouts. He cited their evolving policies as a reason for withdrawal. The military has since decided to end over a century of support, including access to bases and backing for the National Jamboree.

Hegseth may use a legal loophole to justify the termination, claiming the Scouts’ direction could be 'detrimental to national security'. The decision marks the end of a long-standing partnership between the military and the youth group.

The Pentagon’s withdrawal ends decades of collaboration with Scouting America. The organisation will no longer hold events at military bases or receive institutional support. The split reflects broader tensions over the Scouts’ modernisation and its impact on traditional affiliations.
