Peter Eder launches SPÖ leadership bid amid Salzburg’s austerity protests
Peter Eder, president of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor, has announced his bid to lead the city’s Social Democratic Party (SPÖ). Speaking aboard a local train in Salzburg, he criticized the conservative-far-right government’s cuts to healthcare and elder care as 'socially cold' policies. His candidacy follows mass protests this week against austerity measures in the region.
Eder, aged 56, made his announcement on November 28, 2025, during a press briefing. He has been part of the SPÖ’s interim leadership since October 2024, when former chair David Egger-Kranzinger stepped down. Currently, the party is jointly run by Eder, Barbara Thöny, and Bettina Brandauer.
The leadership race will shape the SPÖ’s direction in Salzburg as it opposes the current government’s austerity agenda. Eder’s candidacy highlights growing resistance to cuts in essential services. A final decision on his role will be confirmed at the party conference next June.
