Peter Mandelson’s fall from grace deepens over Jeffrey Epstein ties
Disgraced former UK Labour Party chair and ex-US ambassador, Peter Mandelson, has faced a series of repercussions due to his links with billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. This week, he was removed from his post at the Design Museum and taken off the government payroll.
The Design Museum, which had listed Mandelson as an Emeritus Trustee since his tenure as Chair of Trustees, has stripped him of this honorary title. This decision comes after Mandelson's friendly relationship with Epstein was revealed to have continued until 2016, years after Epstein's conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution.
Earlier this month, Mandelson was also removed from a list of honorary fellows at St Catherine's college, Oxford. In September 2024, Manchester Metropolitan University stripped him of his honorary doctorate and a commemorative medal. These actions follow Sir Keir Starmer's decision to sack Mandelson as US ambassador in July 2024, after emails showed Mandelson sending supportive messages to Epstein even as he faced jail for sex offences.
The Foreign Office recently published emails that revealed the extent of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein, which was materially different from what was known at the time of his appointment as US ambassador. Mandelson was 'withdrawn' from his £160,000 a year post this week, rather than resigning.
Mandelson's ties to Epstein have led to a series of removals from honorary positions and loss of government backing. These actions reflect the growing concern and disapproval of Mandelson's past associations and his failure to disclose the full extent of his relationship with Epstein.
