Philadelphia fights to land the 2028 Democratic National Convention bid
Philadelphia is competing to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention (DNC). The city has been shortlisted alongside Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, and Denver. Local leaders are pushing hard to secure the main event, highlighting the city's experience and upgraded facilities.
The bid is being led by David L. Cohen, a well-known politico in the region. He has estimated the cost of hosting the convention at between $90 million and $100 million. Erin Wilson will take on the role of executive director if Philadelphia wins the bid.
Philadelphia has hosted major political events before, including the 2016 DNC. Since then, the city has expanded its hotel capacity and improved its arenas. The South Philadelphia Sports Complex, with the Xfinity Mobile Arena as the main venue, is expected to serve as the primary location for the event.
Mayor Cherelle Parker is seen as a key advantage in the city's proposal. Dan Hilferty, CEO of Comcast Spectacor, is also involved in the planning process. Organisers believe the city's infrastructure and political experience make it a strong contender.
If selected, Philadelphia would join a small group of cities that have hosted both Republican and Democratic events. The decision will depend on logistical, financial, and security considerations. The outcome is expected to be announced in the coming months.
